TRAINING METHODS TOOLKIT –
Practical Methods for Engaging and Supporting Apprentices

Workplace training is most effective when apprentices are actively involved, understand what they are doing and gradually take greater responsibility for their own learning.

However, many workplace trainers rely on explanation and demonstration alone because they have never been introduced to a wider range of training methods.

This workshop provides practical methods, tools and ideas for designing workplace learning in a more varied, structured and effective way.

Content

  • Understanding how workplace learning works
  • Moving from instruction to active learning
  • Formulating clear learning objectives
  • Selecting methods that fit the task and the apprentice
  • Explaining and demonstrating tasks effectively
  • Using questions to activate thinking and understanding
  • Applying the four-step method appropriately
  • Using guided learning conversations
  • Encouraging apprentices to explain processes in their own words
  • Planning practical learning assignments
  • Using observation tasks and reflection questions
  • Supporting independent problem-solving
  • Adapting methods to different levels of experience
  • Giving constructive feedback during the learning process
  • Checking learning progress without creating unnecessary pressure
  • Using digital tools and AI to support workplace learning
  • Planning short training sequences for everyday work
  • Practical exercises and transfer to participants’ own training situations

How Does the Company Benefit?

Workplace trainers gain a broader range of methods for supporting apprentices effectively.
They become better able to select suitable approaches, structure learning situations and encourage apprentices to think and act independently.

This improves the quality of workplace learning and helps reduce repeated explanations, misunderstandings and unnecessary dependence on the trainer.

What Makes This Workshop Different

The workshop focuses on methods that can be used directly in everyday work.
It is not about creating artificial classroom situations in the workplace. Instead, participants explore how normal tasks, conversations and work processes can be turned into effective learning opportunities.

The methods are practised using realistic examples and adapted to the participants’ own departments, occupations and training situations.

What Participants Take Away

Participants leave with a practical toolkit that they can use flexibly in different situations.
They gain greater confidence in planning learning sequences, involving apprentices actively and adapting their approach when a method does not work as expected.

They also develop a clearer understanding of when to explain, when to ask questions, when to observe and when to allow apprentices to find their own solutions.

International Perspective

Training methods need to reflect the vocational education system, workplace culture and expectations regarding hierarchy, independence and communication.

The workshop can therefore be adapted to different countries, industries and organisational contexts.

For international programmes, principles from German workplace-based training can be introduced as practical examples and then adapted together with the participants to fit local structures and learning cultures.
